Churton Park Community Walkers

Newsletter 24 March 2024

Last week’s walks.

The three Wednesday groups comprising 10 Pleasure Pacers, 28 Steady Steppers and 22 Fast Footers went around Newlands, while on Thursday 7 walkers completed a local walk that saw them walking for 90 minutes with the evening becoming dark towards the end.  On Friday 10 walkers went around the Zealandia external loop.

A reminder about walking arrangements:

After everyone has arrived at the starting location, each group should confirm its leader and also nominate a ‘tail-end Charlie’.  Please remember the medical kits – there is at least one for each group – and a reminder to take photographs. These allow us to record that day’s walkers in each group – please send them to both Bill Gaudie and Paul Alpe (and/or use our email address).

Reminder:     Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Walk Details for Wednesday 27 March 2024.

This Week's Walks:  We are at home this week with all three walks starting in the Churton Park New World carpark. So we will be meeting at the Southern end of the carpark at 9:00am for a start time of 9:05am.  The three walks are all new walks, but obviously will be similar to others we have done in the past in our home area.

PP’s:  A 4.92km loop around the streets and parks of Churton Park.  With the walk being in Churton Park there will be some unavoidable hills.  However with a bit of local knowledge these walks could be readily shortened if some of the hills seem too much.  You can see the walk here.

SS’s:   A 5.77km loop taking in the streets and walkways of Churton Park.  Some hills of course as the walk is in Churton Park. You can see the walk here.

FF’s:  A 7.17km loop taking in the streets and parks of Churton Park and a little bit of neighbouring Johnsonville. Part of the walk is guessed as some of the tracks are not yet recorded on the Mapometer base. You can see the walk in NZMapometer here and on PlotaRoute here.

Parking:  Southern end of the New World carpark

Coffee:  Simmer, of course.  We will advise them that a good number of us will be coming.  Hopeful all the walk finishing times are spread out.

When you open the website to view your walk have a quick look at the Home Page  This usually has new images each week showing views from one of our walks.

Cancellation

If the walks are cancelled an email will be sent out as early as possible but definitely before 8:00am.

Photos

Walkers - please try and take a photo of each group on walking days and email them to this link.  Preferably small size (around 450kb).  It has been great to receive a larger number of photos from PPs and SSs - keep them coming, please!

A selection of photos from the Wednesday walks around Newlands/Woodridge:
"You can't beat Wellington on a good day" and this was certainly one of those.

Thursday's walkers ventured out around the south of Churton Park, across to the north of Johnsonville and to the base of Mt Kaukau.

And to end the walking week the Friday adventurers headed up and around the perimeter of Zealandia, including a refreshment stop at the Brooklyn turbine.

And also from the Friday walkers...  Russell Paterson spotted this collection of letter boxes.  One of them is a customised microwave - Russell suggests it is a repository for Hotmail!
